What’s a MIMO antenna?

A MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) antenna sends and receives signal through two or more simultaneous data streams, providing better signal strength and quality than SISO (single input, single output) antennas.

An LTE/5G 4×4 MIMO antenna may be the right solution for you if:

  • You need to improve signal reception on a router, hotspot, or modem that converts cellular signal to WiFi.
  • Your router or other device has four SMA, TS9, or U.fl/MHF ports.
  • The outdoor signal at your location is fair or moderate.
  • You need faster download speeds for streaming videos and downloading files.
  • You need improved signal for cellular frequencies that aren’t amplified by cell signal boosters (like band 71 and 5G bands between 2300 and 4200 MHz).

For needs other than these, a cell signal booster may be a better option. If you have any questions about which option is right for you, please feel free to contact Powerful Signal—we’ll be happy to help you!

What kind of results can I expect from this MIMO antenna?

Most cellular routers include their own set of antennas. Typically these are “rubber duck” or “paddle”-style dipole antennas that send and receive cellular signal right at the router. If cellular signal is weak or fair where your router is, the Poynting XPOL-24 MIMO antenna can improve your reception and cellular data speeds, often significantly.

To test the improvement in reception, we took an InHand FWA02 5G cellular router to a location with weak cellular signal. We assessed the router with its six omnidirectional dipole antennas and with four of the antennas replaced by an XPOL-24 connected by 5-foot runs of TS-195 coax cable.

This test was conducted on Thursday, , between and AM MDT at Harrisburg, Utah, with a T-Mobile 5G SIM card. The T-Mobile tower was 2.4 miles to the northeast, with hills between the tower and the test site. Speed tests were done with a Motorola Edge 2022 Android smartphone using the Speedtest by Ookla app.

In our test, the Poynting XPOL-24 MIMO antenna provided 10 times the signal strength, 31⁄5 times the download speed, and 2½ times the upload speed of the router’s factory antennas. Average ping (latency) was also reduced 42%, download ping was reduced 67%, and jitter (variation in latency) was reduced 83%.

How do I know which ports on this antenna go to the ports on my router / modem. There are two labeled AUX and two labeled main.
The Poynting XPOL-24 has two MAIN connectors and two AUX/DIV connectors. Which ports on your router they attach to depends on the router.

For example, we sell the Peplink MAX BR1 Pro 5G, which has Cellular A, Cellular B, Cellular C, and Cellular D ports. The MAIN connectors attach to Cellular A and B, while the AUX/DIV connectors attach to the Cellular C and D connectors.

Should I be using self-amalgamating tape to seal over the N-type connectors to the antenna?
Yes, Powerful Signal recommends sealing all outdoor antenna and cable connections with self-amalgamating tape to protect them from the elements and prevent corrosion.

I purchased the Poynting XPOL 5G antenna. Does the bracket have any influence on the signal? You can buy both aluminum or steel wall brackets; which do you recommend? Do you have to have an antenna amplifier between the router and the antenna?
The Poynting XPOL antenna and the bracket that comes with it are rated to withstand winds up to 100 MPH (160 KPH). We recommend using the manufacturer’s bracket. If you expect winds stronger than that, please contact us for assistance.

Since the bracket is behind the antenna, opposite the face that points at the cell tower, it will not influence or distort the cellular signal the antenna sends or receives… See full answer »

I have a MU-MIMO TP-Link 5G Deco x80. Is it possible to connect the Poynting XPOL-24 4×4 MIMO antenna to it? It only has 2 SMA ports. The new Zyxel NR5307 5G Wi-Fi 7 also has only 2 SMA connections. Can the XPOL-24 work if you only connect cables A and B but don’t connect cables C and D?

Yes, it’s possible to connect a 4×4 MIMO antenna like the Poynting XPOL-24 to a 2×2 router like the TP-Link 5G Deco x80 or the Zyxel NR5307. You would connect either pair of cables (A & B or C & D) to the router.

The downside to doing this is you would be spending more money for a 4×4 MIMO antenna when all you need is a 2×2 MIMO antenna. If all you need is 2×2, then the Poynting XPOL-2-5G would be more economical and provide you with the same performance… See full answer »
