Do cell phone signal boosters really work?

A cell phone signal booster is an electronic amplifierexternal link icon, a device that uses electric power from a power supply to increase the amplitude (or gain) of a signal.

Like any other electronic amplifier, a cell signal booster has to have some signal to improve. If there is no outside signal, then the booster can’t work because there’s nothing for it to amplify. (Multiply any number by zero and you still get zero.)

If there is at least some outside cell signal, then a cell phone booster has something to work with. All other things being equal, the strength of the outside cell signal and the power output (gain) of the booster will determine how much area the booster can cover: The stronger the input cell signal and the more powerful the booster, the more inside area can receive usable cell signal.

With exact signal strength readings, it’s even possible to calculate how much coverage area a specific amplifier will provide. Please contact Powerful Signal if you’d like help determining the potential coverage of a cell signal booster system.
